Arizona senator, former Republican nominee for President, and American hero, John McCain, was diagnosed with a primary glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain tumor on Wednesday. It’s the same type of tumor that The Tragically Hip lead singer, Gord Downie, was diagnosed with.

It was only after McCain underwent surgery to remove a blood clot at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix that the presence of cancer was found by lab results. The Arizona Coyotes president and CEO, Steve Patterson, tweeted out a tribute to the 80-year-old senator.

McCain is a long time hockey fan, who has tweeted support for the Coyotes.

McCain has attended many Coyotes games.

The Coyotes even gave out bobbleheads of McCain wearing a jersey.
