Rumor: Alex Pietrangelo to sign with the Maple Leafs

The St Louis Blues have put themselves in quite the pickle with their captain, Alex Pietrangelo. Contract extensions for Justin Faulk and Marco Scandella have limited the team's funds for next season. Add this to the fact Pietrangelo is ready and willing to explore his options, St Louis may be 'cuked'. Cue, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Pietrangelo recently spoke with Pierre LeBrun of the Athletic and had this to say regarding unrestricted free-agency:
I'm going to explore all options, you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you're not sitting back there with your agents and your family laying out everything on the table, thinking about every possibility, that's really what you should be doing. When you have a growing family, it's one of those things where if you can put yourself into a position where you're somewhere long term, it's a little bit easier than having to pick up and move potentially every couple of years

Cue the front-loaded long-term extension with a no-movement-clause, full of signing bonuses. Oh and did you mention a growing family, Mr Pietrangelo? Let's not forget he's from 20 minutes north of Toronto, and also played his junior hockey in Ontario instead of the college route, so he could be closer to home.

A source connected to Pietrangelo's representatives confirmed, Toronto will be in the Top-2, and have been on Pietro's radar since they tried trading for him in 2018. Speaking of the deal that almost transpired, the same William Nylander will likely have to be moved in order to make room for the Blues defenseman. The Leafs would likely move Nylander for a more 'north-south' type of player, younger, and on a cheaper deal than just under $7 million that Nylander is making.

The Toronto Maple Leafs value family, maybe more than any other organization in hockey. Just ask John Tavares and how he found out he was becoming the captain of the Leafs. The team snuck in his wife and infant child, to surprise him in the president's office.

The Maple Leafs have a huge hole to fill on the right-side of their defense next season, meanwhile, Alex Pietrangelo is heading to free-agency with his growing family in mind. Where have the Leafs heard that before?.....
