NHL Trade Rumor: Patrik Laine Offer Sheeted by the Montreal Canadiens

After the failed offer sheet given to Sebastian Aho on July 1st, rumours of offer sheets have been spreading like a wildfire, and the Canadiens may not be done trying to nab a big name RFA.
According to David Pagnotta of "TheFourthPeriod," the Canadiens appear to be looking into tendering an offer sheet to Patrik Laine.

Multiple teams have considered pursuing Marner, including the NY Islanders & Montreal. Hearing Islanders are serious about pursuit, while Canadiens may be focused on Laine. Whether Isles, or another team, move forward with an offer sheet remains to be seen.

It is worth noting that the Canadiens would not be able to give out such an offer sheet before July 8th, since the Carolina Hurricanes have yet to officially match the Aho offer sheet, therefore Montreal's three draft picks remain in limbo.

Unlike the Carolina Hurricanes, the Winnipeg Jets are in quite a predicament with their current salary cap. Andrew Copp and Neal Pionk have just filed for salary arbitration, and Kyle Connor also needs a new contract before the start of the season. With that in mind, an offer sheet to the Winnipeg Jets would be far more feasible than the offer to the Hurricanes.

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has gone out and said that he would match any offer sheet given to Laine or Kyle Connor, but that would be pretty difficult to accomplish, given their current cap situation.
Laine is coming off a down-year for his standards. Scoring 30 goals and 50 points is fine, but much of Laine's offence came in small bunches of games, and is by no means consistent. To add on to the case against him, Laine finished the season as a -24, and many analysts have pointed out his one-dimensional play as being a major issue.

Still, I would have to imagine an offer sheet fit for Laine would have a cap hit of at least 9 million dollars, meaning that Montreal would have to give up two 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd. That might deter Marc Bergevin from agreeing to it, since he seems quite hesitant to give out his 1st round picks (the Canadiens have not traded away a 1st round pick since 2008).

Either way, this off-season has become very interesting with the amount of reported talks in regards to offer sheets, that we have not seen in several years.
