Pending UFA Michael McCarron's Future With Minnesta Wild Coming Into Focus

Minnesota Wild center Michael McCarron celebrates a goal

The supply and demand for centers on this year's free agent market is way out of whack. Far too much demand, and not nearly enough supply. So as a center, pending UFA Michael McCarron was set to earn a nice payday on the open market if he had gone to free agency on July 1st.

With a career-high salary of $900,000 up to this year, McCarron had a chance to make a big impact on his bank account, and there was concern around Minnesota that he might have to decline their extension offer to see what was out there for him.

It appears, however, that his fit with the Minnesota Wild, who acquired him at the trade deadline, is going to win the day, and result in a lengthy deal for McCarron in the Twin Cities.

Insider Michael Russo reports that the Wild made McCarron their No. 1 priority for internal business this summer, and now the 6'6" center is "closing in on re-signing on a long-time contract, per league sources."

Russo suggests that "Maybe Minnesota can get him to re-sign at less than $3.5 million per with a five- or six-year deal, making up for the salary with the term."

McCarron's main contributions to a team are not really on the scoresheet, where he's hit double-digits in goals just once in his nine-year career. Rather, it's his size, physicality, and strong work on faceoffs and on the penalty kill that will be earning him this big payday.

After the team bowed out following the second round of the playoffs, the 31-year-old said he loved it in Minnesota and wanted to stay, while the Wild were said to have "badly" wanted to re-sign him. Where there's a will, there's a way. And unless there's a big snafu, it seems like the two sides will be getting something done on a multi-year extension soon.

McCarron posted eight goals and 17 points this season in 79 games, with 205 hits and a 52.5% success rate on faceoffs.
