Report: The High-Cost To Acquire Robert Thomas From The Blues

The buzz surrounding the St. Louis Blues superstar center Robert Thomas is cooling, as the team has stated they won't be dealing him in the near future.

According to Andy Strickland of the Cam & Strick Podcast, the team is done entertaining trades with the 20th overall pick in 2017

With the "sweepstakes" at its conclusion, there have been reports of what teams have actually offered in return for the Blues' top-center. Thomas played 64 games for the Blues and scored at a point-per-game pace, with 25 goals, 39 assists, and a plus-22 rating.

Thomas is a former 70-point scorer, and in his last three seasons in the league has scored 20+ goals. He won't come cheap by any means.

The Athletic's Kevin Kurz dropped a bomb on us all with the monumental cost to acquire him. The Blues asked for quite a haul in return for him, and understandably so, with what he means to the organization.

“Although the Flyers checked in on Thomas before the deadline, the ask on the 26-year-old was a non-starter for them — one Flyers source mentioned that in March, the Blues wanted Martone, Nesbitt and a first-round pick for Thomas, which was completely unreasonable in their view,”

No one knew if a deal would come to fruition anytime soon, with the Blues trying to restock their draft capital and prospect pool.

A move like this would set them up for success later down the road, and for general manager Danny Briere, it just doesn't make sense to make a move like this when we've seen what Porter Martone is capable of in the NHL.

For now, the Blues are in a holding pattern and will keep Thomas around longer than expected.
