Stars GM Jim Nill Opens Up on Jason Robertson Trade Rumors

Jason Robertson has been the subject of trade speculation all offseason. The Dallas Stars' All-Star forward is entering the final year of his four-year deal with a $7.75 million cap hit with restricted free agency waiting on the other side. Finally, GM Jim Nill has opened up to give his side of the story—and he says he has no intention of trading him.

"I think it probably got blown a little bit out of proportion with us talking to other teams. Everybody knew our cap situation, every team that should be, was calling, to see what we're gonna do and who's available... Of course his name came up.

Stars GM says Jason Robertson 'a big part of our team'

"So were there teams calling? Yes... But do we want Jason Robertson on our team to get him signed? Yes. He's a big part of our team.

"I've talked to Jason over the summer... They've got to do their part, too. Jason's going to get a life-altering contract coming up. I hope we can get something done."

As Nill mentioned, they are tight to the cap this summer, with virtually no space at all. Robertson's new deal wouldn't kick in until the 2026-27 season, but the Stars have less cap space next summer than many teams, at $28 million, with several RFAs and a couple of UFAs to address.

With numerous top players already on hefty contracts with over $8M cap hits for the Stars, whether Dallas can afford to keep him remains a question.
