Maple Leafs Get Goalie Back In The Mix From Absence

Joseph Woll, Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been without goaltender Joseph Woll due to a leave of absence, but great news for them as he is rejoining the team and will resume activities.

Anthony Stolarz has been holding down the net and playing pretty well, but has already called out the Maple Leafs for the effort in front of him. Woll and Stolarz split the games last season, even though Woll had more starts, but Stolarz made himself the undeniable option by finishing fifth in Vezina Trophy voting.

Stolarz can't do it alone, but Cayden Primeau, the waiver wire pickup to hold down a roster spot until Woll was back, only played in one of the Maple Leafs' games. Stolarz started the other six.

Woll started 41 games last season for Toronto, posting a 2.73 GAA and .909 SV%, which is very respectable. It helped the Maple Leafs a ton with a 16.85 goals saved above expected on the season. That will be welcomed back in the lineup, but there isn't any indication whether Woll will be introduced back into games slower or be thrown right into a 50-50 split with Stolarz.

One thing is certain, Primeau will be headed down to the AHL once Woll is absolutely ready to dress in games. This will see him have to pass through waivers and there is a chance that Primeau is claimed. The Carolina Hurricanes, from whom the Maple Leafs claimed Primeau, claimed a goalie of their own, Brandon Bussi, to replace him. Carolina could still reclaim Primeau and send him right down to the AHL while they have an injury in goal.
