Unfortunate Injury Update Revealed On Jets' Josh Morrissey

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey shoots the puck during 2026 game.

The Winnipeg Jets are facing a major setback coming out of the Olympic break, as new updates suggest star defenseman Josh Morrissey could be sidelined longer than initially expected.

After suffering an upper-body injury while playing for Team Canada in Milan, insiders now believe the Jets’ No. 1 blueliner will miss “a good chunk of time,” creating immediate concern for a team already fighting uphill in the Western Conference.

Josh Morrissey Injury Timeline Leaves Jets Waiting

Morrissey was injured during Canada’s opening game of the Olympic tournament on Feb. 12 and did not return for the remainder of the event, including the gold medal game.

He logged just 7:10 of ice time before being shut down, and the exact nature of the injury still hasn’t been disclosed. Head coach Scott Arniel confirmed Morrissey will miss Winnipeg’s first game back against the Vancouver Canucks, though the team is waiting for a full medical evaluation before determining the long-term outlook.

There is some cautious optimism that Morrissey could rejoin the team later on its upcoming road trip, but the early reporting from TSN insider Darren Dreger points toward a more extended absence.

Until the Jets’ medical staff completes their assessment, the organization remains in a holding pattern with its most important defenseman.

Jets Lose Their Most Valuable Defenseman

Morrissey has been Winnipeg’s backbone this season, recording 10 goals and 42 points in 56 games while averaging 24:37 per night, the highest on the team and the 11th-most among all NHL defensemen.

He quarterbacks the top power-play unit, logs heavy minutes in all situations, and has finished inside the top 10 in Norris Trophy voting in each of the past three seasons.

Beyond the numbers, the ripple effect on the Jets’ lineup could be substantial. Without Morrissey anchoring the top pair, the rest of the defense will be forced into elevated roles, and the team’s puck movement and transition game could suffer.

Winnipeg already sits outside the playoff picture at 22-26-8, making a difficult climb even steeper.

While the Jets’ postseason odds were slim entering the break, losing their franchise defenseman for any extended stretch is still a major blow.
