NHL Rumors: Oilers Eyeing 50-Point Michigan Star

The Edmonton Oilers may be preparing to add another intriguing college free agent to their system, with reports linking the team to University of Michigan captain T.J. Hughes

According to insider Jeff Marek, Edmonton recently scouted the Wolverines in person and has come away with a strong interest in the forward, who has become one of the most talked-about NCAA free agents this spring.

Oilers Eye Michigan Captain TJ Hughes

Hughes, a 24-year-old native of Hamilton, Ontario, is enjoying the best season of his college career.

The Michigan captain has produced 19 goals and 50 points in 36 games, helping lead the Wolverines to one of the top records in NCAA hockey.

Unlike many late-season NCAA signings who project as depth options, Hughes brings a proven ability to create offense, something he's shown over his last four seasons at Michigan.

Edmonton Oilers Could Target College Free Agents Again

For Edmonton, with the club lacking a first-round draft pick until 2028, management has increasingly relied on college and European free agents to strengthen the prospect pipeline.

That approach has already produced encouraging results.

The Oilers signed forward Quinn Hutson out of Boston University last year, and he quickly impressed with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors before earning a recall to the NHL. The 24-year-old racked up an impressive 26 goals and 50 points over 54 games in the minors.

The same goes for Josh Samanski, whom the Oilers signed out of the DEL. The 23-year-old has recorded eight goals and 31 points across 45 games in the AHL this season, and he's played 11 games at the NHL level this year, recording two assists.

That success has reinforced the value of targeting experienced college and European players who may be closer to NHL readiness.

Over his four seasons at Michigan, Hughes has recorded 66 goals and 172 points across 152 games played.

Hughes could follow a similar path if Edmonton ultimately wins the race for his signature.
