5 Maple Leafs Not Expected Back Next Season

Get ready for a retool in Toronto.

The Maple Leafs are hiring a search firm over the next two weeks to help with their general manager recruitment, and once the new GM is in place and at the helm, expect to see a series of roster changes coming this summer.

The Leafs missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade and CEO Keith Pelley doesn't feel the team needs to fully rebuild, and just wants to see a re-tool on the fly. With this in mind, here's five Maple Leafs who aren't expected back next season:

Morgan Rielly

Rielly needs to be the first to go and from all accounts, that appears to be the case. Expect to see the new GM ask Rielly for a list a three teams he'd be willing to waive his no-movement clause for, and expectations lie that it will be the Seattle Kraken, Vancouver Canucks, and Calgary Flames. Rielly's the longest tenured Maple Leaf, and has fallen from grace with Leafs Nation, who have recently turned their backs on the struggling defenceman.

Nick Robertson

Robertson heads into another murky offseason with the organization, as Treliving wouldn't commit to a long-term contract extension last summer, and now Robertson is once again a restricted free agent this offseason. The pesky winger hasn't been able to land a consistent role under Craig Berube, despite making changes to his game, so expect to see Robertson push for a trade this summer, much like he did two years ago.

Anthony Stolarz

The Maple Leafs are deep at the goaltending position and with two top prospects waiting in the wings behind Joseph Woll, look for the Maple Leafs to try and package Stolarz for either a two-way defenceman, or top-six right-winger, which are their two biggest areas of concern heading into next season.

Simon Benoit

The Maple Leafs are expected to reshape their blueline and Rielly and Simon Benoit are two names who are likely on the way out. The team will get Chris Tanev back, OEL isn't going anywhere, same with Jake McCabe, and there's also Brandon Carlo, who the team is hoping has a bounce-back season in 2026-27. Benoit struggled a lot this season and will be looking to hit the reset button on his career in different colors next season.

Calle Jarnkrok

Jarnkrok is a pending free agent this summer and with declining footspeed and a new GM coming in, don't expect to see the Maple Leafs circle back on the veteran forward. Jarnkrok has lost a step, he's lost his heavy wrist shot, and he's essentially lost his spot on this roster. Jarnkrok will not be back in Toronto next season.
