Russo writes that although the Blues weren't interested, there's a new GM in town this summer, and the Wild could take another swing at Thomas.
"With Alexander Steen taking over for Doug Armstrong as GM on July 1, you can bet (Wild GM Bill) Guerin will try again for the high-end offensive, right-shot centerman who can win draws. Plus, Thomas is another one of (Quinn) Hughes’ plethora of childhood pals. He has five years left on a deal that pays him $8.125 million."
It's possible that Guerin might be re-thinking the construct of the next offer he makes to the Blues, however. Wallstedt clearly outplayed veteran Filip Gustavsson down the stretch and went on to take over the No. 1 job between the pipes in Minnesota for the playoffs, starting 10 of the team's 11 postseason games.
Yurov, an excellent young prospect, showed great promise as a versatile, two-way forward in his rookie season. He could still be one of the bright, young assets that Guerin dangles in a potential trade this summer—for Thomas or another impact player.
Thomas, 26, holds a full no-trade clause and insisted after the fact that he had no desire to be moved. We'll see if that changes this offseason.
