3 Teams That Could Sign James Reimer
With Alexandar Georgiev signing as a fourth goalie for the Buffalo Sabres, that should open the door for teams to once again look at adding the veteran James Reimer as a third string option in their organization. You can never have enough goaltending depth at such an important position. These are the teams that could next jump on the Reimer train and hope he would put up numbers like he did at the end of last season if called upon.
Minnesota Wild
The Minnesota Wild have potential problems to worry about with Kirill Kaprizov, but that doesn't mean the team can't address goaltending further. While Jonas Gustavsson could use a new contract, the real concern is a third string goalie. Cal Petersen is not a viable option in the NHL anymore if Gustavsson or Jesper Wallstedt get injured and the Wild have to call someone up. Reimer would also be a safety net for Wallstedt seeing as it will be his first season as a full time NHL goalie with Marc-Andre Fleury retiring. Gustavsson is a workhorse, but the Wild can't be trusting a rookie with five career games and a .877 SV% as the lone starter if he misses time like in the past. Reimer can handle a decent workload.
New Jersey Devils
The New Jersey Devils are going to lose Nico Daws to waivers before the season starts. They made their decision with that when the team signed veteran Jake Allen to a five-year extension while Jacob Markstrom is still under contract and will also probably be re-signed. This is Daws' first season eligible for waivers and he is a good young goalie talent, one that teams would want to get a look at. There are definitely teams looking for young goalies and will give him a look. So there would be no third string goalie for the Devils to call up if Markstrom or Allen get injured or miss time. Reimer wouldn't be likely to get much playing time since the Devils trust both of their veteran goalies, but he's there for relief and a capable option.
Vegas Golden Knights
The Vegas Golden Knights moved off of Ilya Samsonov, but he is one of the goalies still available on the free agent market. If Vegas hasn't gone after him yet, I don't think there's a high chance they will. Rather, the team should bring in someone who is a little less valuable and is more comfortable being in a third string role. The Golden Knights may need him if Adin Hill misses any time. I don't know how much trust is in Akira Schmid to start if that happens and Carl Lindbom, while having a good 2024-25 season in the AHL, can't be trusted in the NHL yet with no games played.
