Breaking: Marc-Andre Fleury Signs PTO In Fitting Farewell

What a fitting way to say farewell. Three-time Stanley Cup champion Marc-Andre Fleury has signed a PTO with the team that he backstopped to those Cups, the Pittsburgh Penguins. He will play one final home game in the preseason wearing the Black & Gold.

Fleury was the first overall selection in the 2003 NHL Draft by the Penguins, and played the first 13 years of his career there, leading them to the Cup in 2009, 2016 and '17.

He is the Penguins' all-time leader in goaltending games played (691), wins (375) and shutouts (44).

A 'full-circle moment' for Fleury who returns to the Pittsburgh Penguins

“The entire Penguins organization is honoured to welcome Marc-Andre Fleury back to the ice in Pittsburgh,” said Penguins GM Kyle Dubas. “This past year everyone witnessed how beloved and respected Marc is in the game of hockey, but the adoration goes beyond his accolades and career. Marc means so much to our team, our fans and the City of Pittsburgh because of the person he is and the example he set. The Penguins feel he and his family are most-deserving of this opportunity to celebrate this full-circle moment back where it all started in front of the black and gold faithful.”

After he left the Penguins, he went from there to the Vegas Golden Knights, where he spent four seasons and won the Vezina Trophy in 2021 at the age of 36.

Now 40, Fleury made the decision that the 2024-25 campaign, his 4th year with the Minnesota Wild, would be his final NHL season.

The PTO with the Penguins is solely to allow him to make his final NHL appearance, even if only an exhibition game, with his original team. That game will come on Sept. 27 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
