Buffalo Sabres Sign Alexandar Georgiev to One-Year Contract

The Buffalo Sabres have added some goaltending depth to their roster, signing veteran netminder Alexandar Georgiev to a one-year contract worth $825,000.

Georgiev, 29, played last season with the Colorado Avalanche and was moved in-season to the San Jose Sharks in a move that involved Mackenzie Blackwood heading the other way. Georgiev went a combined 15-26-4, including an .875 save percentage.

Georgiev's best season came back in 2022-23 with the Avs when he posted a 40-16-6 record including five shutouts and a .919 save percentage. It's bit quite the fall for grace for the Russian netminder but the Sabres are hoping that had a lot more to do with the Sharks' struggles than Georgiev's game.

Buffalo has Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen as their starter and signed long term, but Georgiev will have a shot at winning the backup role at training camp if he's able to outplay one-time top prospect Devon Levi and journeyman Alex Lyon.

Per the team's release, Georgiev has played 303 career games spanning eight seasons with the New York Rangers, Colorado and San Jose. He led the league in wins in both 2022-23 and 2023-24 as a member of the Avalanche and was selected to the All-Star Game in 2024.
