Breaking: McDavid Signs Multi-Year Extension With Oilers
The long-awaited Connor McDavid extension is done in Edmonton. It's a two-year deal worth a shockingly low $12.5 million annually. It's the ultimate sacrifice for the team, something we rarely ever see in pro sports. The incredibly team-friendly deal leaves the greatest player on earth with no raise at all from his expiring deal, and proves once and for all what McDavid has been saying all along, that his No. 1 priority is winning with this Edmonton Oilers team. At least in the short term.
“Connor’s commitment to our team and our city is surpassed only by his singular focus on bringing a Stanley Cup back to fans of the Edmonton Oilers,” said Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman in announcing the signing.
After Kirill Kaprizov's record-breaking $17 million AAV, many wondered just how much below that McDavid was willing to go. Turns out, a lot more.
McDavid signs 'the best bargain in hockey history'
As Robert Tychkowski writes in the Edmonton Journal, the captain has put his money where his mouth his, and signed "the best bargain in hockey history."
With the AAV he could have rightfully demanded, McDavid left anywhere from $10M to $14M on the table over the course of his two-year extension.
The three-time Hart Trophy winner has averaged 42 goals and 125 points per 82 games over his illustrious 10-year career.
