Insider Links Pending UFA Sergei Bobrovsky To Maple Leafs

Insider Elliotte Friedman told the crew on the NHL Network Sunday night that he's heard that "it's unlikely that Sergei Bobrovsky will be back" in Florida next season.

With that, the rumors of the pending UFA goalie's next destination can continue, and the Friedge even dropped a big one himself on his 32 Thoughts podcast on Monday, saying he 'wouldn't be shocked' if the two-time Stanley Cup champion netminder wound up with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Friedman points out that two current members of the Leafs were very close to Bobrovsky when they all played together with the Panthers. Anthony Stolarz was Bob's backup in net when they won their first Cup in 2024, and at the same time, current Toronto fourth-liner Steven Lorentz "was Bobrovsky's shooter," Friedman said. "He's Bobrovsky's guy. He will always be loyal to Bobrovsky, because Bobrovsky kept him in the NHL, because he would go shoot on him every morning.

"So there's two guys there who know him extremely well. It wouldn't shock me if he ended up as their guy, potentially."

'It wouldn’t shock me if Bobrovsky ended up (with the Leafs)', says insider

The Leafs recently traded one of their two starters between the pipes, Joseph Woll, in a deal with the Flyers, leaving Stolarz as the supposed main man in goal. Though we should note that Dennis Hildeby had a terrific 20-game trial with the Leafs last season, and he is out of options. So the Buds would lose him if they tried to send him down to the minors again next season.

It should be an intriguing situation to watch what happens in net for Toronto the rest of this offseason.

In Florida, Bobrovsky is set to become an unrestricted free agent, and he was expecting one of those six-year type deals from the Panthers that Brad Marchand received exactly one year ago at the same age that Goalie Bob is now (37). But the Panthers don't intend to go that route, it seems, for Bobrovsky, at least not at a high AAV.

He had the worst season of his 16-year career this past year, with an .877 save percentage and a 3.07 goals against average.
