Quinn Hughes Addresses Questions About His Contract Situation

His brother Jack opened up earlier in the day, now the man on the spot, Quinn Hughes, has had a chance to face the media. One of the best defensemen in hockey, he has been eligible for a contract extension with the Minnesota Wild for over two months.

Now, pressure points are upon us. Training camp opens next week, then the 2026-27 season starts just a couple of weeks later. Is he feeling the heat?

Mark Lazerus reports that Hughes said he does not "feel backed up against the wall where I have to sign before camp." Additionally, he's not concerned about it 'hanging over his head during the season.'

Talks are still in the early stages on a potential extension, and his extended answer went like this:

"This is going to be done whenever I feel like it needs to be done. I don't feel backed up against a wall. I'm very thoughtful. I want to make sure I'm taking my time on everything and make sure I'm making a decision that is going to be good for everyone. That's kind of where my head has been at.

"We haven't had that many conversations just because of how I wanted my summer to go in terms of being fresh and resetting and enjoying and training and being around friends and family. As we get going here, I'm sure it'll heat up, but I don't feel backed up against a wall where I have to sign before camp."

Hughes very happy in Minnesota, he says

"I really do like it here," Hughes said of Minnesota, while adding that 'the organization has nothing it needs to prove to him,' writes Lazerus.

He added that head coach John Hynes, GM Bill Guerin, and teammates like Brock Faber are "massive draws" for him in any decision he makes.

So at this point, all the doom and gloom about him not signing may be a bit overstated, but at the same time, he's being guarded, as is his right, and it's hard to say which way this will go.

Hughes still has another year to run on his current deal, so the Wild have more time to convince him to stay even if an extension doesn't get done before the season starts.

Following last month's record-breaking signing of his fellow All-World blueliner Cale Makar, at $20.4M AAV, Hughes is in for a huge new deal, whenever it comes.
