Washington Capitals Rumors: Top-6 Forward In Sights

The Washington Capitals are still winning games and are very much still in the playoff picture this season despite selling at the trade deadline. As they hope to be competitive as long as Alex Ovechkin is under contract and chasing the NHL record in goals, they will have to make some moves in the offseason to come back stronger.

One of the Capitals' main offseason goals is to bring in a top-six winger. They traded Marcus Johansson, Garnett Hathaway, and Lars Eller at the trade deadline, but they were all bottom-six pieces in their lineup. The Capitals are also hoping to finally move on from Anthony Mantha in the offseason as well, so there is lots of room to upgrade.

The Capitals have already gone and extended Sonny Milano, but he should be considered a middle-six winger. As for Connor Brown and Conor Sheary, neither have been extended yet and may very well hit free agency. Brown is a top-six winger, but has missed all but four games this season and Sheary is constantly underutilized. The team also has Craig Smith, but with the season he's having, he's a bottom-six player at best and is a UFA at the end of the season as well.

The Capitals have taken care of some business by trading away or extending a number of their upcoming free agents. They are lacking some of the more top-end talent and should also have some cap space to work with in the summer. There will be some good players available and the Capitals will be pushing hard for them in free agency or potentially even before on the trade market.
