3 New York Rangers Named Trade Candidates
The New York Rangers are riding the struggle bus.
General manager Chris Drury is not liking what he's seeing so far from his hockey club, as the Rangers are off to a 3-5-2 record to start the year, and sit second last in the Eastern Conference. Their offense has produced just 22 goals in 10 games, and despite having Igor Shesterkin in net, that's simply not good enough. Moves could be coming sooner than later.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Rangers have three prime trade candidates including Artemi Panarin, Alexis Lafreniere, and Braeden Schneider:
Panarin’s name has started to circulate around the rumour mill, with teams like the Minnesota Wild already linked to potentially having interest, but he owns a full no-movement clause and will have a say in where he ends up, if dealt. Lafreniere’s name has also popped up in trade speculation, dating back to last season, but moving him would result in a seismic shift in the Metropolitan Division and it’s unclear if the Rangers are interested in exploring another blockbuster move.
Blueliner Braden Schneider has also seen his name tossed around in trade gossip, as teams have inquired about his availability. Drury has been reluctant to explore a move in the past, but with the 24-year-old eligible to become a restricted free agent next July, with arbitration rights, could the Rangers consider a move this season?
Panarin is a pending UFA with a massive $11.6 million ticket, which means Drury is going to have to retain some salary, but on the flip side, will be able to fetch a significant return in the deal. While the Wild make sense, keep an eye on the Utah Mammoth, Florida Panthers, and Washington Capitals.
Schneider seems the most unlikely to be dealt, however former first-overall pick Lafreniere is the wild card here. The 24-year-old forward is signed to a long-term ticket at $7.45 million AAV, and so far through 10 games, has just one goal and three points.
Keep an eye on the Rangers, they have major decisions to make and are a bit of a mess at the moment.
