The Columbus Blue Jackets upgraded their center position significantly for the 2011-2012 NHL season. First they traded for Jeff Carter from the Philadelphia Flyers and today they signed free agent Vinny Prospal from the New York Rangers. The contract is worth $1.75 million, $2.6 million cap hit with bonuses.

The Rangers are close to the cap and did not offer Prospal who is 36 years old another contract. The Blue Jackets believe although he was injured most of last season that he can rebound and be a key contributor to their team. It is a good signing if Prospal can stay healthy he adds depth for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
