The Calgary Flames and Phoenix Coyotes traded with one another to improve their teams for the 2011-2012 NHL season. The Coyotes were looking for a number one center and took a gamble by trading for Daymond Langkow. Langkow is 34 and has a $4.5 million cap hit. He is trying to regain his form after a serious injury.

In return the Flames acquired Lee Stempniak. Stempniak is a third liner who had 19 goals and 19 assists last season. His cap hit is $1.9 million. The Calgary Flames dumped salary and the Phoenix Coyotes got a center who might fill a void.
