They traded their first and second round 2012 NHL Entry Draft picks to the Washington Capitals for goaltender Semyon Varlamov in an effort to solidify a competitive team.

The trade has not paid off as the Avalanche are far from a playoff position. Paul Stastny who is 25 years old is struggling with 7 goals, 7 assists and is a -6 in 24 games played. The younger center Matt Duchene is producing more and playing better overall, making Stastny expendable.
