J.P Parise passed away on January 7th at the age of 73. He played 17 seasons in the NHL with the Minnesota North Stars and New York Islanders.

Denis Tsygurov passed away on January 10th from unknown causes at the age of 43. He played 4 seasons in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres and Los Angeles Kings.

Mark Marquess passed away on January 19th at the age of 89. He played 1 season in the NHL with the Boston Bruins.

Marc Dufour passed away at the age of 73 on January 23rd. He played 3 seasons in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers.

The cause of death is unknown, but neurosurgeon Dr. Charles Tator, said the analysis of Montador’s brain showed he had widespread deposits of a protein called hyperphosphorylated tau. The abnormal protein in brain cells is a marker for CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy).

Todd Ewen passed away on September 19th at the age 49. He played in 12 NHL seasons with the San Jose Sharks, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues. The cause of death is reported to be a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head. Ewen's family would later confirm that he has been dealing with depression for several years.

Norm Defelice passed away on September 27th at the age of 82. He played multiple games over the course of 20 years with the Boston Bruins replacing Terry Sawchuk.
