The Washington Capitals made the biggest trade of the season on Monday night, acquiring defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk from the St. Louis Blues.

ESPN insider Pierre LeBrun reports Washington is sending a first round draft pick in 2017, a conditional second round draft pick in 2018 as well as 22 year old forward Zach Sanford back the other way.

It's a big price to pay for a rental player who intends to hit free agency this summer. The Blues retained 39% of Shattenkirk's salary. Washington is gunning for the Stanley Cup this season.
