Calgary Flames inviting a couple of veterans to training camp

According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Calgary Flames are inviting both Devante Smith-Pelly and Tobias Rieder to training camp on professional try out contracts.

Smith Pelly is still just 27-years-old and has over 50 games of playoff experience. The big bodied winger finished last season with the Washington Capitals and Hershey Bears where he tallied 8 points in the NHL and 14 points in 20 games in the AHL. A far cry from his career high 38 points a couple of seasons back. The Flames are hoping Smith Pelly can find his legs and bring a toughness to their bottom 6.

Tobias Rieder on the other hand is a 26-year-old German who played 67 games with the Edmonton Oilers last season and didn't register a goal. He finished the year with 11 points, however, it's obvious the Flames management team saw him enough to think he's got something worth checking out. Reider has 128 points in 379 career NHL games.

The Flames are surrounding their superstars with toughness, and are still working on a deal for Matthew Tkachuk. Like many of the RFA's on the market, the goal is to be in training camp on day one.
