Speculation: The Canadiens Negotiating a Trade for Patrik Laine

In a game most Canadiens fans would like to forget, there was one interesting point that many should take note of.
Some reporters have pointed out that Marc Dobson was present at the Canadiens game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dobson is the director of professional scouting for the Winnipeg Jets.

Rumours regarding Patrik Laine being traded have been swirling all summer long, and the Canadiens have reportedly been looking to acquire his services via trade rather than trying to offer sheet the young Finn.

One would have to assume that Montreal would have to send back a package containing Jonathan Drouin, a skilled forward who hasn't been able to find his footing since arriving in Montreal, along with some defensive help like Jeff Petry or Brett Kulak, and a solid prospect or high draft pick. All of the players listed were dressed for last night's game.

While nothing is guaranteed, and for all we know the Jets could have been scouting some of the Leafs prospects, it seems pretty likely that the Jets and Canadiens are in discussions for some sort of trade. But this is all speculation, nothing is confirmed.

A trade involving Patrik Laine and Jonathan Drouin could be very beneficial for both teams. Drouin hasn't been able to find his game in Montreal, but managed to score 53 points in 81 games last season. Perhaps a change of scenery could help the 24-year old turn into a 60-70 point player that many expected him to be. Laine on the other hand, has been the subject of a lot of criticism over the summer, capped off with him taking a shot at his line-mates Bryan Little and Nikolaj Ehlers (accidental or not). His recent actions could create a toxic environment in the locker room should he return to the Jets this season, and Kevin Cheveldayoff wold be justified in getting Laine out of Winnipeg.
