NHLTR: The Toronto Maple Leafs are closing in on a trade

Kyle Dubas and the Toronto Maple Leafs management team had themselves quite the summer and it appears the tinkering continues as the trade winds are circulating the Leafs once again. The Maple Leafs are deep at centre, even with John Tavares out, and according to Elliotte Friedman, they are working on finding Nic Petan a new home and fresh start.

The Leafs signed Petan to an extension, but unfortunately, the versatile forward has had trouble finding a consistent spot in the lineup, as he's behind Jason Spezza, Frederick Gauthier and Nick Shore on the depth chart.

The 5'9 24-year-old has 1 assist in 3 games this season and only managed to find himself into 18 NHL games last season. The Leafs signed Petan to a two year extension as some believed it was a way to avoid him getting claimed on the waiver wire once he was sent down to the Marlies of the AHL.

Three clubs to keep your eyes on include the Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks and Winnipeg Jets. The Maple Leafs would be looking for a mid-level prospect or 3rd round pick for Petan's services.
