Rumor: Panthers To Acquire Duncan Keith

There is so much to break down about this trade rumor. There is a strong connection between Chicago Blackhawks' Duncan Keith and Florida Panthers' head coach Joel Quenneville; they won 3 Stanley Cups together. Also, this deal isn't necessarily a done deal, but it is certainly on the table if the deadline climate is right.

First off, this deal is reliant upon the Blackhawks not considering themselves as playoff contenders. Most had ruled them out, but now they're only 3 points away from the 2nd wildcard spot with a game in hand. Secondly, his annual cap hit is only $5.5 million and he is on contract until July 1st 2023. This would normally be a non issue, but he is already 36 years old. Third, Keith is an absolute specimen and his physical strength and endurance is second to none in the league; not even the young guys.

Given this conflicting information, Coach Q has still been lobbying both the Panthers and Blackhawks organizations to get the framework put in place for this deal. The return for Duncan Keith has not yet been determined but the Blackhawks are reportedly interested in young prospects and high draft picks in return.
