New Developments In Patrik Laine Trade Rumors

Patrik Laine reportedly demanded a trade from the Winnipeg Jets early in 2020, but GM Ken Cheveldayoff has yet to find the right trade partner. It now appears that Laine will play the 2021 NHL season in a Jets jersey.

Despite the trade rumors surrounding Laine, Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press believes the star forward will remain a member of the Winnipeg Jets for the foreseeable future. The recent trade demand by Jack Roslovic is the team's highest priority at this time. GM Cheveldayoff sent a clear message to Laine during a recent press conference.

"I assume (Laine's) probably going to have one of the best years of his career given the group of players that we have and the professionalism that is there, the maturity level that all the players gain year over year over year, I think just helps us move forward."

Laine will become an RFA after this season as his 2 year, $13.5 million contract is set to expire. It is in his best interest to have a career-high year in order to increase his leverage during contract negotiations. While he registered a respectable 28 goals and 35 assists for 63 points last season, he will need to be more consistent if he wants to earn the money he believes he's worth.
