Winnipeg Jets Targeting Several Top 4 Defensemen

The Winnipeg Jets are currently in 2nd place in the North Division, but they must add depth to their defence if they have any realistic playoff expectations. It appears they will be targeting a top 4 defenseman before the trade deadline on April 12th.

According to PuckPedia, the Jets have $3.7 million available in their LTIR relief pool. This will allow them to add roughly $4.4 million to their salary cap at the trade deadline. They may also provide more cap space if they wish to waive Anton Forsberg and maintain the taxi services of Eric Comrie.

According to Murat Ates of The Athletic Mattias Ekholm of the Nashville Predators and David Savard of the Columbus Blue Jackets are the top candidates in which the Jets will target. Their cap hits are $3.75 million and $4.25 million, respectively. There are also a number of other candidates they may target to beef up their blue line.

Ryan Murray of the New Jersey Devils (cap hit: $4.6 million) may be an expensive option, but he may be on the market after a lacklustre season. He doesn't seem to fit in well with P.K Subban and has been a consecutive healthy scratch on numerous occasions.

Alex Goligoski of the Arizona Coyotes (cap hit: $5.475) may be an option if the Coyotes retain some salary, or the Jets exchange enough salary. He has played in the top two role for the 'Yotes and eat up big minutes in all situations. This may be an expensive option, but Goligoski is a proven veteran.

Rasmus Ristolainen of the Buffalo Sabres is set to be a UFA after the 2022 season (cap hit: $5.4 million). He is said to be unhappy in Buffalo and is longing for the day to wear a new uniform. This is another expensive option, but the return for a defensemen of this caliber may be bigger than what the Jets can reasonably put up. He is one of the best options for the Jets, but is also one of the least likely to be acquired via trade.
