Report: Quinn Hughes likely leaving Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild are between a rock and a hard place, and it's a terrible position to be in when your best defenceman is without a contract for next season.

Quinn Hughes is the talk of the town at the moment, as we're six weeks into him being eligible to sign a contract extension, and so far, there's hardly even extension talks on the table. Hughes isn't in any rush to sign a long-term deal to stay in Minny, and many around the league feel if it gets to the season opener, he's going to make it clear he won't be discussing an extension until after the season. Frankly, GM Bill Guerin has a huge mess on his hands, and could have to make a bold decision at some point this year.

Hughes, 26, is signed for next season at $7.8 million AAV, and doesn't hold any trade protection. Yes, his need of a contract extension certainly helps his trade destinations, as Hughes could make it clear he's not interested in signing to stay with his new club, and gain some leverage in trade talks. 

If Guerin can't get Hughes' deal done by opening night, he's going to have to go to market before March's deadline. Would a swap for Dylan Larkin be in play? Would the Red Wings take a chance on re-signing Hughes, a Michigan native and someone with serious ties to the area? Is it worth it considering most people around the league feel Hughes will be heading to New Jersey to join his two brothers? 

What we do know is this. The Wild have a serious problem on their hands if they can't get Hughes to stay, and will have to make a trade to recoup some of the assets they sent to Vancouver in the trade last season. The Devils know he wants to come to New Jersey, so why would they expedite the process and give up Dawson Mercer and Seamus Casey, if they know Hughes is on the way at the end of the year.

If Guerin can't get a deal done, he'll have no choice but to make a move.
