Rumor: Dallas Stars Willing To Trade Top Dman For Seth Jones

As the roster freeze prior to Seattle's expansion draft carries on, teams are starting to chat about moves surrounding the NHL Entry Draft coming up this Friday. According to Dave Pagnotta, the Dallas Stars have expressed significant interest in Seth Jones. No word on an official trade yet, but apparently one part of the package being offered by the Stars includes defenceman John Klingberg.

Klingberg, 28, was drafted by the Stars 131st overall in 2010. He has played seven seasons in Dallas and has established himself as a top-pairing RD, showing his true potential in his 8 goal, 67 point season in 2017-2018. Klingberg makes $4.25 million for one more season and is due for a big raise when he hits the UFA market next summer. The Stars might be concerned about having to pay Klingberg and attempting to swap him before he heads to unrestricted free agency.

With that said, Seth Jones is also due to be re-signed next summer, so if this deal were to happen the Stars would be gambling on the idea that Jones would cost less, or play that much better than Klingberg. Stars fans will tell you that Klingberg is the better player of the two, but Jones was 4th in Norris voting in 2018, two spots ahead of Klingberg. They may be closer than fans of either team realize. Odds are that Colombus will have to sweeten the deal somewhat, Dallas is certainly not eager to part with Klingberg, who was such a big part of their run to the Cup Finals in the Edmonton bubble last summer. Maybe there's a deal to be worked out that involves Patrick Laine as well? Nothing is off the table, apparently, as the Stars are very interested in Jones.

Do you think Dallas should include Klingberg in a Seth Jones deal?
