The Carolina Hurricanes Sign Versatile Veteran

The Carolina Hurricanes are adding a bit of depth, as they have signed Brendan Smith to a one-year, $800,000 contract.

In 48 games this past season with the New York Rangers, the 32-year-old scored five goals and recorded 10 points. He is always an entertaining player to watch, as he plays the game with a real edge and is not afraid to fight. The Hurricanes may benefit from adding a bit of grit to their lineup and he sure does provide that. However, with the Hurricanes having so much depth on defense, he likely will not crack their top-six, but instead be their seventh defenseman.

However, another unique element about Smith's game is that he also can play on the wing, too. Therefore, they essentially have signed the ultimate utility man for depth. That is not a bad thing at all, especially at that low of a price. He will sure come in handy when injuries present themselves, too.
