The Chicago Blackhawks Have Acquired And Extended Seth Jones

The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired Seth Jones, the 32nd overall pick of this draft and a 2022 sixth-round pick from the Columbus Blue Jackets. In return, Columbus will be getting Adam Boqvist, Chicago's 2021 and 2022 first-round picks and their 2021 second-round pick. If Chicago's pick next season is in the top 2, it will change to their 2023 first-round pick.

Jones also is set to sign an 8-year extension that will carry a $9.5 million cap hit. He will officially be able to sign it on Wednesday once his current contract officially has one year left on it.

This is a huge contract for Jones, but it does come with a lot of risk. Although Jones can be a top-pair defenseman when he is on his game, he struggled a lot this season. In 56 games, the 26-year-old defenseman had five goals and 28 points. He also was a -18, which is concerning compared to his other seasons with the Blue Jackets. His best professional season came in 2017-18 when he had 16 goals and 57 points in 78 games. The Blackhawks are hoping to receive that kind of production from him.

The Blue Jackets have done a stupendous job with their return. They not only are getting two first-round picks and a second, but also a rising star in Boqvist. His ceiling is very high and he has been impressive in his short NHL career thus far. Over two seasons, he has played 76 games, while scoring six goals and registering 29 total points. This season was his better one, though. In 35 games, he had two goals and 16 points.

Ultimately, Columbus did a marvelous job. They would have lost Jones for nothing next off-season to free agency, but instead brought back some marvelous assets. Still, if Jones can play up to his full potential like before, he will be an amazing addition for the Blackhawks moving forward.
