Rumor: Patrick Marleau To Sign Contract Later In Season

Patrick Marleau may be without an NHL home right now, but that may change. According to Adam Proteau of The Hockey News, the 42-year-old forward could sign somewhere in the league before the trade deadline. At this point of his career, he would be utilized as a depth player.

Marleau has yet to officially retire, so it isn't far-fetched to believe that he wants to continue playing. Last season with the San Jose Sharks, he passed Gordie Howe for first all-time on the games played list. In 56 games on the season, he scored four goals and had nine points.

It's rather apparent that Marleau's best days are behind him, but could he provide value as 13th or 14th forward? He comes with a plethora of experience and could be a good player to have in the locker room. This is especially the case for this season's contenders. Due to the fact that the Sharks did not sign him this summer, it seems like they aren't open to another reunion.

Some teams that come to mind are the Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights. Maybe even the Leafs could offer him a contract. We will have to wait and see if he decides to give it one more go. If he does return, it would be his 24th year in the league.
