2 Teams to Watch for Matt Murray Waiver Claim

The Ottawa Senators are expected to waive goaltender Matt Murray on Saturday. The netminder is likely to make it through, however if he does get claimed expect to see one of these two teams involved.

Buffalo Sabres

The Sabres took a decent run at signing Murray out of Pittsburgh after he won two Stanley Cups and posted a record of 117-53-19. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported the Sabres were calling some teams about goaltending so there's some potential. While the Sabres have money to spend, Murray's contract is heavy the final two years as he'll make $7 million cash next season and $8 million in 2023-24. If any team bites the bullet it could be Buffalo.

Arizona Coyotes

The perfect scenario for the Coyotes would be to claim Murray, he goes on a huge run and finds his game again and then they trade him for draft picks. The Yotes have taken on a few expensive veteran contracts of late so perhaps the trend continues. Arizona is currently riding Scott Wedgewood and Karel Vejmelka, so there may still be room for Murray as he's only 27 and considering his track record in Pittsburgh could easily find his game once again.

It doesn't feel like a move a playoff contending team is going to make as Murray is expensive and hasn't been performing well obviously. If a contract termination ends up the resolution, we'll examine a few more potential destinations.
