Trade Rumor: Columbus Blue Jackets Goaltender To Be Dealt Shortly

According to Aaron Portzline of The Athletic, trade talks involving Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Joonas Korpisalo have increased over the last week and a deal could be on the way shortly.

Portzline also noted that the Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens and Arizona Coyotes now appear to be the most likely destinations for the 27-year-old goaltender. Yet, I wouldn't count the Edmonton Oilers out just yet, as it is known that they have expressed interest in him, too.

A Korpisalo trade is inevitable, as he has one year left on his contract and is set to become an unrestricted free agent. Furthermore, Elvis Merzlikins also just signed a five-year, $27 million contract extension this off-season. Thus, he is their guy moving forward.

The three new teams in the sweepstakes are extremely interesting to see. The Sabres are off to a hot start and with this, it seems that they want to remain competitive rather than role over and quit. Who could have seen this coming from them after the summer they had?

The Canadiens showing interest is particularly intriguing. They have struggled immensely so far this year. This could also be an indicator that Carey Price's leave of absence could be long term. Keep in mind, the Canadiens already have Jake Allen.

As for the Coyotes, Carter Hutton will be out for the next handful of weeks, but bringing in a rental in Korpisalo is their answer to this? For him to dealt to Arizona, one has to assume an extension would be agreed upon beforehand. They haven't even won a game yet this season and have zero business being buyers.

We will have to wait and see what happens with Korpisalo, but his time in Columbus seems to be coming to a close.
