NHL Rumors: Blues Heavily Pursuing Defenseman

According to Elliotte Friedman, the St. Louis Blues are heavily targeting Montreal Canadiens defenseman Ben Chiarot.

Since it became clear that the Canadiens were set to be sellers this season, the Blues have been linked to Chiarot. Now, in February, they have an 8-29-7 record and are inevitably going to be trading away their rental candidates. Chiarot would be a perfect fit for the Blues, as they need a left-handed defenseman who can fit on one of the bottom two pairs.

The Blues aren't the only team in on Chiarot, and it's very easy to understand why. The 6-foot-3 defenseman plays a very heavy game, which is perfect come playoff time. In 41 games this season with the Canadiens, he has five goals, four assists, and a minus-25 rating. The last statistic is of course due to Montreal's struggles as a collective unit. He also has an impressive 93 hits on the year, too.

Time will tell if the Blues end up winning the Chiarot sweepstakes. It appears that they are pushing even harder to land the veteran and ultimately, it makes perfect sense.
