NHL Rumors: Rangers Shopping Former First Overall Pick

According to David Pagnotta, the New York Rangers have made Alexis Lafreniere available for trade. However, he also noted that any deal involving the 2020 first-overall pick would need to bring in a "top-flight talent" who has term on his contract.

This is a bombshell of a development. Although the Rangers are reportedly shopping Lafreniere, that doesn't automatically mean that he will be moved. Yet, the mere fact that it is at least being considered just two years after he was selected first overall is ridiculous.

Lafreniere has yet to take off at the NHL level, however. After recording a 21-point campaign in 56 games last season, he only has 13 goals and six assists in 59 contests this year. He is still just 20 years old, so he has plenty of time to reach his expected potential. However, with the Rangers looking to win now, it's become clear that they could move him if they land a superstar in return.

Nevertheless, this trade deadline has gotten even more interesting. This is something to keep an eye on from here.
