Red Wings Claim Defenseman Off Waivers

The Detroit Red Wings have claimed Olli Juolevi off waivers from the Florida Panthers.

When it was announced that the Panthers placed Juolevi on waivers, it seemed likely that the 23-year-old would end up being claimed. Now, we have confirmation that it has been the case, as he will be joining Detroit.

The Red Wings could end up being a very solid home for Juolevi. Although they have taken a noticeable step forward this season, they are still very much rebuilding. As a result of this, the youngster should have more chances to play than he did with the Panthers. Furthermore, he will be playing with a younger group of players, too.

In 10 games this season with the Panthers, Juolevi had zero points and an even rating. The 2016 fifth overall pick also had two goals and an assist as a rookie with Vancouver last season. Overall, he hasn't been able to develop into his potential, but perhaps going to Detroit could help him at least become a full-time NHLer.

Overall, this isn't a bad move at all by the Red Wings. Let's see how he performs from here.
