Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Defenseman to the Nashville Predators

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Nashville Predators have done some business on Monday as the Maple Leafs have dealt defenseman Alex Biega to the Preds. It's expected a late-round conditional pick would be heading the other way.

Biega was a depth option for the Maple Leafs who ended up dressing in two games so far this season with the big club and 31 others with the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies. The 33-year-old mobile defender provides Nashville with another right-handed shot option for their blue line and someone who joins the team with 243 career games in the league.

Biega is making $750,000 on the cap this season and is a pending unrestricted free agent. The 5-fot-10 defender has also spent time with the Detroit Red Wings and Vancouver Canucks throughout his career. Certainly a minor move for the Maple Leafs, however it's all about  money this time of year as well as NHL contracts. This opens up some space for further moves ahead of the 3pm deadline.
