Capitals Sign Defenseman

The Capitals have signed Gabriel Carlsson to a one-year, two-way contract. At the NHL level, he will carry a $750,000 cap hit.

The Blue Jackets elected not to send Carlsson a qualifying offer this offseason, thus making him a UFA. Now, the 25-year-old has a new home with the Capitals, and he will be aiming to push for a spot in their top six for the 2022-23 season.

Carlson is a former first-round pick who has had trouble cementing himself as a full-time NHL defenseman. During the 2021-22 campaign, he set new career-highs with two goals, seven assists, and nine points in 38 games. Let's see if he can build on that momentum and put together a breakout campaign in DC from here.
