NHL Rumors: Latest on Blake Wheeler Trade Buzz

The Winnipeg Jets are disappointed they have not made it over the hump these past few seasons and some more change could be on the way. Newly minted head coach Rick Bowness is ready to put his fingerprints on the team, meanwhile it sounds like management is contemplating some big decisions. Hockey insider Frank Seravalli has listed Jets captain Blake Wheeler as a trade candidate this summer.

Wheeler has two seasons left on his deal at $8.25 million annually, and the 35-year-old holds trade protection where he submits a list of five teams he'd be willing to play for outside of Winnipeg. Last season the veteran forward recorded 60 points in 65 games and from the sounds of it, a change of scenery could be on the way this summer:

Sources say the Jets have begun to explore the market and engage with teams on the possibility of moving Wheeler, the franchise stalwart and last remaining holdover from the Atlanta Thrashers days. Wheeler has complete control over his destination until July 1, when his full “no-move” clause converts into a five-team list to which he’d accept a trade. The early sense is Wheeler may be willing to consider a proposed destination that also is not on his list, if it’s a proper fit for his family and career.

Wheeler appears open to the possibility of being moved as a good captain knows exactly what his team needs.
