NHL Rumors: Latest on P.K Subban's Next Contract

P.K Subban has been enjoying his offseason and now, it's time to get down to business. The free-agent defenseman is one of the biggest talents left on the open market and it's likely we'll see a deal completed in the next couple of weeks.

Subban's agent Don Meehan recently caught up with Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette and opened up about what's been a relatively quiet summer for his client:

He wants to play, I can tell you that. But I think at this stage in his career, he would want to play somewhere that would provide a good opportunity for him. Without sounding too aggressive, I think he's earned the privilege to be somewhat selective in terms of where he would play so that it works for the team and it works for him. In other words, he doesn't just want to play anywhere. I've told him that there are teams moving money - assessing what kind of cap space they have, analyzing their depth scenarios to determine just exactly what they can do. Some of these issues are in play as we speak, so I can't get a definitive response from some teams in terms of moving ahead, but I have had expressions of interest for him to date. But the teams that have expressed interest aren't in a position to contract now because they've got other things in play

Subban isn't the Norris caliber defenseman he once was, but there's no denying he's as talented as they come and in a more suited role to his current game, the 33-year-old could thrive. He registered five goals and 17 assists in 77 regular season games last season, despite playing a career-low 18:18 of ice-time a night. A number that may even dip further with his new club.

Subban does a ton off the ice, as well as on and any team who signs the polarizing defenseman is getting a positive influence for their hockey team and the community. Look for a deal to be announced in the next couple of weeks as it's all business for Subban from here.
