NHL Rumors: 2 Potential Trade Destinations for Rangers' Lundkvist

New York Rangers defenseman Nils Lundkvist has made his way to the trade market as the former first-round pick appears to be the odd man out on Broadway. Lundkvist is 22 years old and has a bright future ahead of him in the league. Reports have surfaced he's not happy with his role on the team and wants out. There's already been a ton of interest with teams kicking tires, so expect to see a deal transpire before training camps open in a couple of weeks. Three potential destinations for Lundkvist include:

Montreal Canadiens

Lundkvist has a huge connection to the Montreal Canadiens as executive Vice President Jeff Gorton was the man responsible for drafting the Swedish blueliner back in 2018. The Habs aren't deep at all on defense and Lundkvist has quickly become a prime trade candidate who makes a ton of sense. He's an offensive talent who can produce on the power play, given the opportunity, one that appears wide open on the Canadiens. Montreal is expected to make a serious run at this trade and a deal could facilitate these next couple of weeks.

Detroit Red Wings

General manager Steve Yzerman continues to accumulate young talent and Lundkvist could be next on the list. The Red Wings have a strong scouting presence in Sweden and know him well. Last season Lundkvist put up four points in 25 NHL games, meanwhile tallied 15 points in 34 AHL games. He has 30-plus point potential in the NHL and would we all really be that surprised if he ended up with Yzerman on the Red Wings and became a stud?
