NHL Rumors: Devils to Shop Defenseman

The New Jersey Devils are a team to pay attention to this season when it comes to trading. They have several pending UFAs and if they fall out of the playoff race early, we should expect to see them make an array of trades because of it. One player who we should see shopped in this situation is Damon Severson.

It has already been reported that the Devils and Severson have not had any serious extension talks. The acquisition of fellow top-four, right-handed defenseman John Marino likely is playing a role in that, and that's especially true when noting that he has five years left on his deal. With that, Dougie Hamilton leads the right side of their defensive group. Thus, there may not be room to sign Severson long-term as well.

With all of this, could the Devils trade Severson to help improve another area on their roster that needs help? GM Tom Fitzgerald is looking to make hockey trades after all.
