Philadelphia Flyers & Defenseman Talking Long-Term Extension

According to Elliotte Friedman, the Philadelphia Flyers and Travis Sanheim "are making progress on a long-term extension." With that, Friedman noted that it is in the $6 million AAV range.

Sanheim is set to become a UFA next summer, but the Flyers are clearly trying their best to not allow that to occur. It ultimately makes sense when noting that Sanheim is arguably their top defenseman at this juncture. With that, Philadelphia is aiming to become competitive as soon as possible, and losing Sanheim on the backend would not help their chances of that happening at all.

Sanheim put together another strong season in 2021-22 that saw him score seven goals and record 31 points in 80 games. Overall, that is fairly solid offense, but he more importantly provided them with reliable defensive play, as his plus-9 rating shows. That stat is impressive when remembering how poorly the Flyers played last season.

Nevertheless, this is something to keep an eye on. If Sanheim signs, that is one notable defenseman off the board for next summer's free agency class.
