NHL Rumors: Erik Karlsson to the Edmonton Oilers?

According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Edmonton Oilers have made finding a defenseman a priority this season. While there's a number of talented blueliners available via the trade market, one in particular appears to be getting a ton of attention and that's Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks.

Dreger had this to say when linking the two:

The Oilers need a top defenceman. Now, do they get wild and crazy and try to swing for the fences and try to get in on Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks? It seems impossible that they could do that but there’s some around the organization with interest.

The Oilers have a number of players who are likely available for trade included Philip Broberg and Jesse Puljujarvi. The Sharks are in full rebuild mode and want to rid themselves of some bad contracts and stock pile draft picks and top prospects.

Karlsson is on a tear this season, recording 35 points in 29 games. The 32-year-old is signed through the 2026-27 season at $11.5 million annually and holds a full no-movement clause. If Karlsson wants to avoid the brutal winters in Edmonton, he can choose to do so. He has made a point that he's looking to win meaningful hockey games and if it's not San Jose, he'd appreciate moving on to a contending team. The Oilers are close, but would you consider them true Stanley Cup Contenders? Keep an eye on these two teams, both the Sharks and Oilers are going to be active on the trade market.
