NHL Rumors: Canucks Very Interested In Devils' Defenceman

The New Jersey Devils are looking for a top-six forward with term that they can add at the trade deadline this season. They are in a playoff spot and are looking to go on a run. They don't have a ton of cap space to work with this season, but they have some.

In order for the Devils to get what they want, Damon Severson is likely in play and could be moved. This lines up with the Vancouver Canucks' wants as Rick Dhaliwal noted that the Canucks really like Severson for their defence. Since Brock Boeser is also rumoured to be on the move, a deal could be stuck that suits both sides' needs.

The Canucks are expected to buy Tyler Myers out of the final year of his contract, so that would free up a spot in the top-four of their defence. With Luke Schenn expected to be dealt at the deadline, the Canucks could get an early start on retooling their defence. Severson has thrived in a top-four role but has been pushed to the third pair with Dougie Hamilton and John Marino on the right side in New Jersey. There would be no competition for Severson in Vancouver and they could get the most out of the defenceman.

Severson is a UFA after the season, so a sign-and-trade could be in order if the teams are serious about making a deal. The Devils wouldn't be on the hook for too many years with Boeser and his scoring ability would fit right into the high-flying offence in New Jersey.
