NHL Rumors: Possibility Blues' Captain Re-Signs Short-Term

Elliotte Friedman brought up an interesting thing to think about when it comes to Ryan O'Reilly and the St. Louis Blues, saying, "there are people out there who are wondering if O'Reilly has any interest in a short-term deal in St. Louis because he likes it there."

He's not convinced and we'll see where it goes. O'Reilly has no trade protection and both he and the Blues would have to be discussing something as well as both be interested in the transaction. He has just 10 goals and 16 points in 37 games this season and is a -28 plus/minus.

O'Reilly has been really hard on himself this season because of the disappointing season to this point. He will be out at least six weeks which gives him less time to figure things out before the trade deadline. He is a former Selke Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy winner with the Blues, but the best thing for both him and the Blues may be a fresh start.

O'Reilly may be able to rebound next season or even this season, and that's why there's wonder if a short-term deal could be agreed upon. That way there is less risk for the Blues if he doesn't respond with better play. The Blues could also get assets back at the trade deadline and have lots of cap space to acquire a centerman in the offseason since they aren't planning on rebuilding.
